The word karaoke comes from the Japanese words ‘kara’ meaning ’empty’ and ‘oke’ meaning ‘orchestra’. It first became popular in English in 1979

Karaoke is a Japanese word that refers to a performance in which a person sings along with recorded music. It’s a popular form of entertainment at restaurants and clubs: amateur singers choose their favourite well-known song to sing and then perform it for the crowd.

Michael Jackson – Ghosts

There’s a ghost down in the hallThere’s a ghoul upon the bedThere’s something in the wallsThere’s blood up on the stairsAnd it’s floating through the roomAnd there’s nothing I can seeAnd I know that that’s the truthBecause now it’s onto me
I don’t understand itHeyI don’t understand it!Aw
There’s a thumpin’ in the floorThere’s a creak behind the doorThere’s a rocking in the chairBut there’s no-one sitting thereThere’s a ghostly smell aroundBut nobody to be foundAnd a coughin’ and a yawnin’Where a restless soul is going
I don’t understand itHeyI don’t understand it
And who gave you the right to scare my family? And who gave you the right to scare my baby, she needs meAnd who gave you the right to shake my family tree? They put a knife in my backShot an arrow in meTell me are you the ghost of jealousyThe ghost of jealousy
There’s a thumpin’ in the floorThere’s a creak behind the doorThere’s a rocking in the chairBut nobody’s sitting thereThere’s a ghostly smell aroundBut nobody to be foundAnd a coughin’ and a yawnin’Where a restless soul is going
I don’t understand itYeah yeah!Don’t understand itYou just a dog goneAw
And who gave you the right to scare my family? And who gave you the right to scare my baby, she needs meAnd who gave you the right to shake my family tree? And who gave you the right to take intrusion, to see me?And who gave you the right to shake my family? And who gave you the right to hurt my baby, she needs meAnd who gave you the right to shake my family tree? They put a knife in my backShot an arrow in meTell me are you the ghost of jealousyA suckin’ ghost of jealousyAw
Who gave you the right to shake my family? And who gave you the right to scare my baby, she needs meAnd who gave you the right to shake my family tree? And who gave you the right to take, intrusion to see me?And who gave you the right to hurt my family? And who gave you the right hurt my baby, she needs meAnd who gave you the right to shake my family tree? They put a knife in my backShot an arrow in meTell me are you the ghost of jealousyThe ghost of jealousy
AwDog goneBut there’s no doubt about it, piece of mindTell me are you the ghost of jealousy

5 Tips for Singing Karaoke

Here are some other things to keep in mind about how to have a successful karaoke night:

Warm up your voice before singing so you can really hit those high notes! Follow along with this quick video on vocal warm ups for singers.
Look confident. Start with a smile and with your feet planted shoulder width apart. Make no apologies for being on that stage!
Pick a song you really know so you’re not always having to look at the lyrics on the screen. Don’t forget you have an audience that wants you to sing to them!
Use good vocal technique. Breathe low, and keep your sound placed in your mask rather than shouting into the microphone.
Practice at home! YouTube has many excellent channels, such as KaraFun, that can help you practice.
